The Most Common Risks Covered By Travel Insurance

Virtually any place in the world can be reached within 36 hours, less than the incubation period for most infectious diseases. Because it's so easy for people to see the world, the increase in foreign travelers has increased dramatically! Respitory infections, such as colds or influenza, develop in between 10% and 25% of travelers. Even worse, physicians in Western countries are now seeing infectious diseases never before seen. Travelers are at risk both from infections transmitted from person to person and now by insects. Anyone traveling to high-risk counties should take precautions. An estimated 15% to 45% of short-term travelers experience a health problem associated with their trip. Even more travelers to developing countries, including young children, can expect to experience some sort of a health problem.

Purchasing travel insurance before you leave for your trip can be as important as packing your credit cards! And travel insurance is not just for you medically. You should consider getting travel insurance if you are planning to do any driving in a foreign country. Whether it's your car or if you are renting a car, boat or personal watercraft, travel insurance will cover any liability if you cause property damage, injury or death to another person. If you are studying abroad, travel insurance will cover medical expenses including oversees death, burial and transport expenses.

If you have a non-refundable vacation package, purchasing travel insurance before you leave will reduce the costs associated with a loss of luggage or travel documents. Cancellation and lost deposit expenses may also be covered under certain limitations. Various delays and the costs associated with missing a portion or "leg" of your trip due to "unforeseen circumstances beyond your control" will also be a covered expense.

There is also additional insurance coverage you might consider purchasing specifically for the time period that you are traveling. Accidental Death Insurance is an insurance policy that provides payment if the insured's death occurs as a result of an accident. An adjustment rider to an already existing life insurance policy that provides for this type of cash payment or an additional cash benefit may be one cost effective alternative to purchasing a new form of insurance coverage specifically for your trip.

Although your health insurance should follow you on trip within the United States, many U.S. health insurance carriers do not cover medical expenses overseas. Some may cover emergency care, but often will require patients to pay foreign providers out of their own pocket at the time of service and reconcile claims upon your return. Medical expenses that arise overseas from pre-existing conditions are often not covered at all. Purchasing supplemental medical coverage is a good way to cover all these basses. Medical policies vary among travel insurance providers, so it is important to read the find print. For about $4 per day with a 7-day minimum, companies will offer $100,000 of medical coverage that includes care coordination, doctor's fees and hospital expenses as well as the cost of emergency evacuation to a hospital or home.

Whatever travel insurance decisions you make, it's best to make them early. Many providers require that insurance be purchased within seven to 10 days of the initial trip deposit. Some tour companies will sell insurance up to 60 days prior to departure. The best bet is just to take out travel insurance from the beginning and know that you're covered so you can have peace of mind to enjoy your travels.
