Traveling to high risk countries

You've researched, reserved and deposited your money to take a trip abroad. Losing it to an unforeseen event or illness would be disappointing?and expensive. So, what can you do?

A travel insurance policy can be a saving grace when something unexpected crops up. Because the "unforeseen" always happens, carrying travel insurance is a wise move, whether its supplemental medical insurance, baggage insurance, a policy that covers money lost, cancelled portions of your trip or other situations or losses that result from sudden and unforeseen circumstances, determining whether or not you want to cover the cost of your trip is the first step.

Traveling to high risk countries is also a matter of safety for all. Making your own judgments about travel to these areas, balancing the risks with the rewards that international travel to high-risk areas may provide are recommended. Getting the information you need when you voluntarily put yourself at risk is crucial. Make sure that you are not traveling in an area where there has been a history of terrorist attacks, robbery, kidnapping or other dangerous activity.

Also, make it a habit to discuss with your family what they would do in the event of an emergency. Make sure that your affairs are in order before leaving home. This will ensure that, should anything happen, your loved ones will not have additional burdens to bear during an already difficult time.

Register with the United States embassy or consulate in the area where you are traveling as soon as you arrive. Remaining friendly, but cautious, when asked to discuss personal matters, your itinerary or program will help to protect others from having information about you they shouldn't.

Leave nothing in your hotel room that would be considered personal or business that is revealing about where you live or work. As you are enjoying the new sights, watch for people following you or "loitering" to observe your coming and goings. Keep a mental note of safe havens, such as police stations, hotels and hospitals. Make sure that you let someone else know what your travel plans are and keep them informed if you change or otherwise alter your travel plans. This will ensure that someone other than yourself and your party is aware of what you should be doing. If possible, traveling with others is also a good idea.

Avoid predictable times and routes of travel and report any suspicious activity to local police, as well as the United States consulate or embassy. Select your own taxi cabs at random and do not accept those others appear to "give" to you and your party. Don't take a vehicle that is not CLEARLY marked as a taxi and compare the face of the driver with the one posted on his license that should be hanging in the vehicle. Be sure to identify visitors before opening your hotel door and don't meet strangers at unknown or remote locations. Always make sure you are in a well traveled area with plenty of light.

Refuse unexpected packages and formulate a plan of action for what you and your party would do if a bomb explodes or if there is gunfire nearby. Drive with your car windows closed in crowded streets, too. Bombs have been thrown into passing vehicles through open windows. In addition, make sure that your vehicle is in good operating condition in case you need to resort to high-speed or evasive driving. Check for loose wires or other suspicious activity around your car.

Above all, make sure you enjoy your trip. It is rare that everyone gets a chance to travel internationally. There are beautiful sights, sounds, smells and cultures just waiting to be discovered, experienced and enjoyed. Bring back happy memories of traveling to a high risk area, not unhappy ones.
